Mariposario - Butterfly Garden in Jocotepec

April 2024

Brad and I recently took a mental health day and traveled to the Mariposario in Jocotepec, to visit our friends from BioTu in their efforts to further the Centro Biorregional de Capacitacion hacia la Sustentabilidad located at the CETAC campus in Jocotepec.

The center is located close to the malecon parking area.

BioTu

BioTu is an organization dedicated to education towards sustainability based in Mexico that incorporates the knowledge of native peoples on how to live within natural limits with the benefits offered by the modern world.

We were the only visitors on the tour that day. The Mariposario was opened in October 2022. There has been much work and development done and there is still plenty to see and learn.

Recently a group of students from Terranova Institute visited the center to learn sustainability and how to nurture and take better care of our local butterflies.

The day we visited our hostess Melina Ramirez welcomed us warmly, even though we had not called beforehand to let them know we were visiting.

Melina one of a family of staff that oversees and works at the center.  The center acts as a living classroom for the CETAC students, affording them easy access and instruction on sustainable practices and lifestyles.

Since our last visit in 2022, at the opening of the center, BioTu has constructed a kitchen and sleeping lofts built out of natural materials like straw, soil and clay using passive design techniques.

Solar Oven

BioTu teaches students how to make their own passive solar ovens for food preparation.

Water Heater

BioTu has also created and taught how to heat water using passive systems and repurposed materials.

There are now aquaponic ponds were fish are raised and their tank water used for the growing of organic crops.

If you are interested in a visit, call for their tour days and times.
