Today was our Tekio day at Huerto Coxalan in San Juan Cosala.

In preparation, the rest of our fields were cleared and cleaned.
En preparación el resto del huerto fue limpiado.

Prestar el "servicio" significa prestar el tekio, tiene alto significado moral en la comunidad indígena, prestar el servicio es honroso para sus miembros a la vez que es entendido como una obligación moral por estos a la que no se pueden negar, es una de las ocasiones de reunirse y trabajar en labor común e identificarse como comunidad.
Providing the service means providing the tekio, it has a high moral significance in the indigenous community. Providing the service is honorable for its members at the same time that it is understood as a moral obligation by them that cannot be denied, it is one of the occasions to meet and work together and identify as a community respecting your heart.
LEARNING - APRENDIENDO
Today our maestro was Axel Becerra, who lectured on soil composition, moisture adherence and materials for building.

The community tried their hand at creating building binding materials.
La comunidad intento combinando materiales para la construcción.
Sand, soil, grass, manure were on hand for the class.
Arena, tierra, pasto y estiércol estaban presentes.

TESTING THE SOIL - ANALIZANDO LA TIERRA
Having learned what makes a good building combo...we set out to find the best soil for the job. Several holes were dug in different parts of the field.
Ahorra sabiendo lo que combina para hacer buen material para la construcción, empezamos a encontrar la mejor tierra para nuestro proyecto. Varios agujeros furero hechos en nuestro huerto.
The different samples were molded into balls and analysed.
Varias muestras fueron coleccionadas y analizadas.
We found the best sample and then set to work collecting enough for our adobe.
Encontramos la mejor muestra y empezamos a recoger esa tierra para nuestra mezcla.
All throughout the afternoon, laughter could be heard.

Most of our activities today were centered around digging holes.

DRY COMPOST TOILET PREP - ASEO DE CONVERSION DE ABONO EN SECO
The primary reason for all this hard work was to prepare an area for our soon to be dry compost toilet.
La razón principal por todo este trabajo fue para preparar una area para un
aseo de conversión de abono en seco.

While we toiled the concept of a dry compost toilet was discussed.

Large stones were moved.

And the area was ready for the first wall to be placed.
Finalmente la area estaba lista para construir la primera pared.
BUILDING - CONSTRUcCION
The area being properly prepped, we set to work placing the largest stones for the foundation of the wall that would eventually become the west wall of the toilet.

primera pared.
Everyone got their hands dirty, happy in the process of creating something new using found,
natural materials.

After all the hard work, it was time for comida. A potluck is a great way of feeding a community and bringing it together.
Después de todo el labor era hora de comida de reunion. Todo mundo trajo comida deliciosa....no hay nada mejor que comer en nuestro huerto en campo en familia.
Food for all is our motto.
"Comida para todos!" es nuestro dicho.
Our hostess and Inspiradora is Irma...who always has a smile for us.
